BEHIND THE EVENT: YWT 2022

As part of Youth Week, we wanted to chat to the young people helping bring these events to fruition. For young people, by young people.

Griff - Behind The Event

First Name: Griff
Organisation: The Circus Studio
Youth Week Event: Support Network

Why are you excited about your Youth Week Tasmania event?
Griff: I’m really excited to see Youth Circus brought into a community space that we don’t usually think of as spaces for performance!

What has been your favourite part of the event planning process?
Griff: I’d never written a grant application before so learning how to do that was a really good experience for me.

Why should young people get involved in Youth Week Tasmania?
Griff: To support events and activities created by young people and to have fun!

Why is Youth Week Tasmania important to you?
Griff: It encourages the community to listen to young people and accept young people for who they are.

What is one word that comes to mind when you think of Tasmania’s young people - the next generation – and why?
Griff: Open.   I think Tasmania’s young people are open to new ways of thinking, different ways of understanding our world and ourselves.

Thanks for being a part of Youth Week Tasmania 2022, Griff!

Samantha - Behind The Event

First Name: Samantha
Organisation: West Tamar Youth Advisory Council
Youth Week Event: Beaconsfield Youth Festival

Why are you excited about your Youth Week Tasmania event?
Samantha: I'm excited about YAC West Tamar's event (Rock Challenge) because it's something that most young people can rally around — music. Music is a common interest and passion in amongst this community, and it's really cool that such talented young bands can rock their hearts out whilst entertaining us.

What has been your favourite part of the event planning process?
Samantha: My favourite part of the event planning process has definitely been delegating roles and responsibilities. There is so much that goes on behind the MC roles — cleaning, bump in, setting down, and it wouldn't be possible without the dedicated YAC team and our leaders. It takes a lot of work, but when we see all the young people flooding in on the night, it will be more than worth it.

Why should young people get involved in Youth Week Tasmania?
Samantha: Young people should get involved in Youth Week Tasmania because the youth are us. We are the future, and we are the ones that can determine our future. These events are local run, so that's another reason to get involved-supporting local businesses and organisations is such an important thing!

Why is Youth Week Tasmania important to you?
Samantha: Youth Week Tasmania is important to me because it is a week purely for young people. This is our week to have fun, relax, and really dwell on the privileges and benefits of being a young person in this day and age. It's also a week where I am free to express myself and my thoughts on being a young Tasmanian.

What is one word that comes to mind when you think of Tasmania's young people —the next generation — and why?
Samantha: Powerful. The special thing about my generation is that we will always stand up and speak for what is right. We are turning the tables, we are changing the story, we are changing society, and that will always be so admirable in my eyes. We are courageous, know right from wrong, and are so willing to fight for our futures. In the simplest words, we hold the power.

A big thank you to Samantha for contributing her thoughts, and for being a part of Youth Week Tasmania 2022!

BEHIND THE EVENT - Sabrina

First Name: Sabrina
Organisation: Glenorchy Youth Task Force
Youth Week Event: Market on the Lawns

Why are you excited about your Youth Week Tasmania event?
Sabrina: I am excited about our market on the lawns event because there are lots of opportunities to make new connections with each generation & today’s youth. It also gives youth groups a chance to make a difference within their community.

What has been your favourite part of the event planning process?
Sabrina: My favourite part of the event planning process is that the GYTF working group, get a local youth artist to create our promotional posters.

Why should young people get involved in Youth Week Tasmania?
Sabrina: Young people should get involved in Youth week as it gives the youth ways to find the resources they need to help them in different ways, such as headspace and pulse.

Why is Youth Week Tasmania important to you?
Sabrina: Youth week Tasmania is important to me, because my passion is wanting to help out my community and I love helping others to be their best self.

What is one word that comes to mind when you think of Tasmania’s young people - the next generation – and why?
Sabrina: Unique! This is because as each generation grows up, all youth/next generation is unique in their own different styles with fashion or coming up with new unique ways to develop their knowledge and skills.

Wonderful thoughts from Sabrina, we appreciate your efforts during Youth Week Tasmania!
